What is a DBS, do you need it and how do you get one?
A DBS(Disclosure and Barring Service) check, once known as the CRB ( Criminal Records Bureau) check, is required of all professional birth, baby and postnatal practitioners registered with MarvellousMammas. The Disclosure and Barring service helps us here at Marvellous Mammas make safer recruitment decisions and prevents unsuitable people from working with the families we nurture and support.
There are 3 tiers of DBS Checks available basic, standard and enhanced.
At MarvellousMammas we believe that only those individuals with the highest level of disclosure known as the Enhanced DBS should be able to join our team of maternity nurses, night nannies and doulas and support families with their newborns and young babies.
How do I apply for a DBS Check ?
As a recruitment agency we will be able to able to apply for a DBS Check as part of our recruitment process. If you are not working through a recruitment process you can only apply for a Basic DBS Check yourself, only an organisation is able to apply for a standard or Enhanced DBS Check .
What do I need to do ?
You must provide a range of ID documents as part of the DBS check application process. We will be able to help you with that.
How long will an enhanced DBS check take ?
You should normally receive a copy of your DBS within four to six weeks, however be aware that at certain times of the year, the DBS has a backlog of applications to process which may cause a delay in their response. Enhanced checks may take longer in the current Covid climate.
How long does a DBS last ?
A DBS has no official expiry date however we recommend that all DBS checks be renewed at least every 3 years or sooner if there has been a significant gap in employment.
Updating your DBS Check
A subscription to the update service lasts for one year.
You can renew your subscription through the update service, either :
When you first register, by choosing automatic renewal
Or up to 30 days before your current subscription ends- but you cannot renew on the last day of our subscription. If you do not renew your subscription before it ends, you’ll need to apply for new DBS check and register for the Update Service again.
Non team members
Marvellous Mammas strongly recommends that birth and baby practitioners, antenatal teachers and allied professionals obtain a DBS and thus offers this service to the wider field of birth and baby professionals who might otherwise not be able to have access to this service. We want babies and new families to be safe.
